Walks near Vernet-les-Bains and to Canigou

PIC DE L'ALZINA

1 - THE START (Place République). We cross the square and we go to the right. We follow the Avenue des Thermes, towards the southern entrance to the village.

2 - Rond-Point du 18 juin 1940. We go to the left (Jardin d'Hiver).

3 - Staircase (on the right). We climb the staircase... We follow a path with yellow waymarks which winds up the hillside...We pass 'Kipling's Rock' (with noticeboard).

4 - Junction of paths. We go to the right.

5 - Viewpoint ('Plate-forme de Burnay'). We go to the left...The path zig-zags up the hill... then it descends a little (the Saint-Vincent valley is on the left).

6 - Bifurcation. We go straight ahead...The ascent continues.

7 - Pic de l'Alzina. We go straight ahead and the path descends.

8 - Col de Llavent. We go to the left...We pass a fine 'orri' (stone cabin).

9 - Bifurcation. We go to the left.

10 - Bifurcation. We go to the left. We are on the track between Vernet and the waterfalls... After a car park, the track enters the village...It descends towards the cemetery.

11 - Junction with the Route de Fillols. We go to the left...We follow red-and-yellow waymarks, to the 'Entente Cordiale' monument.

12 - Town hall (on the left). After the town hall, we go to the left. We descend and we follow the narrow streets of the old village...We arrive in the town centre, our point of departure.
